Jay-Z and replica watches have a long history, and he’s been photographed wearing a number of different marques throughout his long career. Still, he’s been mostly identified as an AP guy. It was clear from early in the show that he was rocking a Royal Oak – its integrated bracelet is sui generis. At times, depending on his gesticulations, one could notice it was something ceramic, which in the AP world already makes it a statement piece. A few closeups in which Hova’s hand and wrist faced the camera for a second point to it being the best 1:1 fake Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Openworked In Ceramic. LeBron may be the biggest baller of them all, technically speaking, but Jay-Z kinda dunked on him with a killer high-complication in ceramic.
In addition to Jay, we saw SpringHill CEO Maverick Carter, who wore a Royal Oak Concept with a purple rubber strap. Although we only noticed one tight shot of it from the side, the strap and some distinctive markings on its case give it away as almost certainly being the Swiss made fake Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Black Panther Flying Tourbillon. The Marvel-inspired watch, you’ll recall, launched back in April as a 250-piece limited edition priced at CHF 150,000.
And finally, the show’s co-creator, Paul Rivera, who also took part in the conversation, wore an top quality copy Audemars Piguet. This one was a bit harder to pin down. It was a Royal Oak of some kind – possibly an Offshore. It’s on a strap, and the profile of the case is unmistakable, but I’d rather leave it there than speculate much further.
Watches aside, the show was a banger. Jay-Z talked about that time he ghostwrote “Still D.R.E.” for Dr. Dre. Seriously? While no super clone watches were discussed, I find it kind of hard to believe that there wasn’t at least a bit of watch-talk off camera. I mean, with these watches in one room, please.
